Supported Image Formats for Image-to-Text OCR

ScanText.io accepts common image files for browser-based text extraction. Upload a supported file, then use OCR to turn the visible words into editable text.

JPG and JPEG

JPG and JPEG are common photo formats. They work well for photographs of documents, signs, receipts, and notes when the text is in focus and the lighting is even.

PNG

PNG is often the best choice for screenshots, digital documents, and images with crisp text. Its sharp edges can help preserve the letter detail OCR needs to identify words.

WEBP

WEBP is a modern web image format that balances image quality and file size. It is supported by ScanText.io when you need to extract text from an image saved from the web.

File size and image quality

Images can be up to 12 MB. A smaller file is not automatically better: use an image that is clear enough to read at normal viewing size. Avoid blurred, heavily compressed, dark, tilted, or obstructed images whenever possible.

Formats that are not currently supported

PDF, HEIC, GIF, TIFF, and SVG files cannot be uploaded directly. If your document uses one of these formats, export or convert the page to a JPG, PNG, or WEBP image before using the OCR tool.
